Today, AI has reached a level where it can comfortably learn writing styles and predict written content's appearance with a high level of accuracy. Generative Pre-trained Transformer 4, or GPT 4, is one such AI software that has generated a buzz in the tech community. With its capacity to simulate a realistic conversation, we will undoubtedly see a considerable impact on chat and messaging apps soon. In this post, we will delve into how GPT 4 can shape the future of chatting and messaging.

What Is Chat GPT 4?

Chat GPT 4 is an artificial intelligence language model that uses machine learning technology to generate high-quality text. It is the fourth iteration of OpenAI's chatbot model, which uses deep learning to generate human-like responses to text-based queries. It is meant to serve as a tool for natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning (ML) developers, content creators, and other professionals. GPT 4 utilizes billions of words from various sources and can understand the correlations between them to produce coherent and comprehensive text and works similarly to its predecessor, GPT 3.5, but with additional features.

Differences Between GPT 3.5 And GPT 4

While both GPT 3.5 and GPT 4 use artificial intelligence language models, there are some notable differences between them. GPT 3.5 uses over 175 billion parameters, which is significantly higher than GPT 4, which uses less than 100 billion parameters. However, GPT 4 is more accurate, and it generates text that is both specific and coherent, making it a more effective tool.

GPT 4 is capable of taking longer context into account, rather than relying solely on previous data input. Essentially, this means that it can better understand when words have different meanings based on the overall discussion. Open AI claims: “We spent 6 months making GPT 4 safer and more aligned. GPT 4 is 82% less likely to respond to requests for disallowed content and 40% more likely to produce factual responses than GPT-3.5 on our internal evaluations.” On their website, they show an example of GPT 4 receiving visual input, such as a picture of ingredients and outputting a recipe using said ingredients in the photo. This is only the tip of the iceberg of what GPT 4 is capable of. 

Open AI also says they’ve “incorporated more human feedback, including feedback submitted by ChatGPT users, to improve GPT 4’s behavior. We also worked with over 50 experts for early feedback in domains including AI safety and security.” The question still remains though, if its predecessors were trained on unethically scraped data, what makes GPT 4 any different? 

How to Use GPT 4?

As of writing, GPT 4 is available as part of the ChatGPT Plus paid subscription. By selecting "Upgrade to Plus" in the ChatGPT sidebar, users can switch to the $20 paid subscription. Upon providing credit card information, users gain the ability to toggle between GPT 4 and previous LLM versions. To ensure the usage of GPT 4, users can verify the black logo used for GPT 4 responses, distinguishing them from the green logo associated with older models.

Once upgraded, using GPT 4 is similar to using ChatGPT Plus with GPT-3.5. GPT 4 offers enhanced capabilities and enables users to fine-tune datasets for tailored results that align with their specific requirements.

The free version of ChatGPT will continue to utilize GPT 3.5, which is comparatively less accurate due to limited data input from 2021 onwards. The GPT 4 API for developers to build applications and services is currently on waitlist according to their website. Several companies, including Duolingo, Be My Eyes, Stripe, and Khan Academy, have already integrated GPT 4 into their systems.

A public demonstration of GPT 4 was live streamed on YouTube, showcasing its new capabilities. Currently, the easiest way to experience GPT 4 is by utilizing it through Bing Chat. Microsoft disclosed that they have been employing GPT 4 in Bing Chat, which is free to use. However, certain GPT 4 features, such as visual input, are not available in Bing Chat. Nevertheless, users can still benefit from the enhanced large language model (LLM) and its advanced intelligence. It's worth noting that although Bing Chat is free, it has limitations of 15 chats per session and 150 sessions per day.

Prompts are given the same way as the previous GPT models; the prompt can be in the form of a question, a statement, or a scenario. Once the prompt is entered, Chat GPT 4 will generate text that follows the prompt's context. Additionally, GPT 4 now accepts visual prompts, so you can take a photo and give it a command prompt based on the visual information in the photo. 

For example, if you enter the prompt, "What can I cook using these ingredients?" Chat GPT 4 will generate a list of recipes that have been rated as the best, based on its data sources. 

What Is The Future of Chat GPT 4?

During an interview posted on YouTube by Connie Loizos, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman discussed the impending launch of GPT-4 and expressed a cautious perspective. Altman stated that "people are begging to be disappointed, and they will be." He acknowledged the potential risks associated with artificial general intelligence (AGI), recognizing its capacity to disrupt global economies. Altman emphasized the importance of introducing incremental changes instead of sudden and disruptive advancements that could limit the world's ability to adapt effectively. While GPT-4 may appear impressive, Altman characterized it as a carefully evolved iteration rather than a radical revolution.

As the EU AI Act is making amendments to include regulations about general AI models such as Chat GPT, we can expect progress to slow down as Open AI makes its generative AI models compliant with the new laws and regulations if they are passed. It specifically called out GPT in an update article “Generative foundation models, like GPT, would have to comply with additional transparency requirements, like disclosing that the content was generated by AI, designing the model to prevent it from generating illegal content and publishing summaries of copyrighted data used for training.”. Whether these new changes apply to future datasets going forward or to old datasets that the model was previously trained on that are not compliant with GDPR remains to be seen. 


Either way, tech companies and app developers have been going ahead with using Chat GPT 4 APIs in their software development such as the new Microsoft Copilot integration in Windows 11. From here on out we can expect generative AI models to be an integral part of our lives.
