How to Monetize Podcast and Playlist with Subscription?

Podcast is one of the most lucrative revenue generating engine. Low expense with high subscription rate. According to our research, 37.46% of YouTube viewers are willing to join a subscription plan. It is not a coincidence that celebrities and key opinion leaders (KOL) are operating a talk show. Just look at Dude Perfect! The problem is that Patreon or other subscription platforms do not have a very flexible system for video. Sometimes certain playlist takes more effort to make and you want to charge a premium for its quality. To tackle this issue, we build a standalone plan to allow creators to set a different subscription pricing for each playlist.

Key Takeaways:

  • A standalone subscription plan is for individual projects that you want to charge monthly. This can be an addition to the default subscription plan.
  • Create up to 10 standalone subscription plans for each playlist or podcast or album.
  • Enable fans to unlock content with a Free Trial Code.
  • You can repackage everything into a collection and sell it as a one-time payment product.

Useful Podcast Stats

Collection over 100 data on the best performing podcast and subscription plans, here are some stats on subscription you can use as benchmark.

  • Average subscription payment is $5.08
  • Average monthly earnings is $56,670 USD with 11,150 number of followers.
  • 91.3% of free members are willing to pay for subscription.
  • 37.46% of YouTuber viewers are willing to subscribe.
  • 29.5% of Twitter/X followers are willing to subscribe.

Do note that each domain rely on different social media channels for networking; thus, the conversion rate of each SM platform can varies.

Why Set Up a Standalone Plan?

On UniFans, we have two types of subscription plans, default and standalone plans. Default is a tier based subscription plan that a fan can only subscribe to one tier. Standalone plan is designed for projects where fans can subscribe to multiple standalone plans.

Here are a few reasons why you would want separated subscription plans:

  • Find the pricing of the current default subscription plan is too low to be financially sustainable for your new direction.
  • Separate your content delivery if you are not sure your subscribers like the new content.
  • Segment content series and track their performances, such as content quantity and revenue, individually.

Do note you can set up your posts to be visible to any selected default tiers and standalone subscribers. Here is an example where Premium subscribers in default plan can access to all my playlist and podcast content, apart from my shitty novel. Steps to Set Up Podcast Subscription

Step 1: Set up a standalone plan for your podcast.

Pricing can be changed any time and will be updated after the next billing cycle. The only thing you can't change are the type of subscription plan and payment method option ( monthly or permanent payment ).

Step 2: Content promotion

If you believe a post will attract a lot of eyeballs, you can toggle on Free Trial Code. Non-subscribers can unlock the post permanently with the code you shared. You can adjust the expiry date of the code.

Step 3: share top quality content

Sometimes you want to share a post that you believe is top tier quality and non-subscribers may want to purchase it, you can set the toggle Unlock Single Post and set a minimum payment amount. You can also turn on "Pay what you want" for fans who want to donate to you. Note that in this case, Premium and Playlist A subscribers do not need to pay extra to unlock this post.

Step 4: Package content into a collection

You can either put content into collections every time you publish a post or organize it in the collection under your home profile. It would be easier to think ahead and organize your content in collections, which you can sell as a package.
