Why Use Alternative Front-end?

Some people don't want their private information be collected by social platforms. In order to use them while not getting on them, you have to use a proxy that works in between your web browser and the platform. The proxy will download the content from the platform and remove all unnecessary elements. It will hide your IP and personal data while nothing is stored on their end.

Most people would use Firefox to block ads with dFPI, uBlock or Privacy Badger; however, it doesn't eliminate the Google's ability to track your behaviors. Using these alterative front-end viewers do not require Google accounts, minimizes the use of third-party cookies and JavaScript dependencies, which are used to gather user information.

Benefits of using an open source alternative front-end viewer:

  • Free and open source
  • No account setup
  • No ads or tracking or feeds
  • Lightweight and fast
  • May work on older devices

Alternative Front-end Viewers

Note that since these are open source projects with no funding, they can stop operating at any moment. Google was cracking down on YouTube viewers using adblockers and YewTub.be was down. Similarly, Instagram kept trying to block Bibliogram and won ultimately.

Imginn ( Instagram )

Imginn is a free web tool that enhances your Instagram experience. It allows you to view profiles and download high-quality photos, videos, stories, and story highlights from both public and private Instagram accounts. The best part? You don't need to download any software; it's entirely web-based and safe to use, respecting user privacy and legal boundaries. Imginn is not affiliated with Instagram but offers an easy and free way to explore and curate Instagram content, making your Instagram journey unforgettable. Give it a try and discover hidden gems on Instagram today!

Nitter ( Twitter )

Nitter is a privacy-focused, open-source alternative to Twitter that offers a minimalist interface resembling the classic Twitter desktop layout. Unlike Twitter, Nitter does not require JavaScript, protecting your privacy by preventing tracking and analytics. It loads pages faster and consumes less data, making your Twitter experience more efficient. Thus, a lot of NSFW artists do post their work through Nitter, especially Chinese creators who are worried about censorship.

Teddit ( Reddit )

Teddit.net is an open-source Reddit front-end that prioritizes privacy. It operates as a proxy between your web browser and Reddit, ensuring no JavaScript or ads are loaded, preventing Reddit from tracking your IP or fingerprint. It offers unofficial APIs for RSS and JSON support without rate limits or needing a Reddit account. Teddit is lightweight, making it faster and less data-intensive than the official Reddit website. It's self-hostable, allowing anyone to set up their instance. Teddit serves as a proxy frontend, removing ads and protecting your IP, but it doesn't store posts. You can use different instances if you prefer alternative implementations. Unfortunately, it is no longer actively maintained.

RedReader ( Reddit )

RedReader is a privacy-focused, ad-free, open-source Android app for Reddit, offering customizable actions, cache management, and multiple themes. Short-term changes are needed to meet Reddit's developer terms, including API key requirements, but it won't affect Google Play users. Long-term plans involve supporting other platforms like Lemmy, prioritizing accessibility, and exploring an "open forum protocol" for interconnecting various websites and apps.

Invidious ( YouTube )

Invidious is a free and open-source alternative to YouTube, offering a privacy-focused and ethically designed platform. It operates without using the official YouTube API to reduce data sharing with Google, scraping video and metadata directly from the website. Invidious provides users with privacy protection, ad-free viewing, and the ability to subscribe to channels and create playlists without requiring a YouTube account. It also offers multilingual support and a developer API for customization. Despite a takedown order from YouTube, unofficial instances of Invidious continue to exist, serving as unlicensed YouTube mirrors that allow ad-free and tracking-free video watching. Here is a list of available instances for each region.

Piped ( YoutTube )

The creation of Piped was driven by concerns about YouTube's invasive privacy policy, including tracking, data usage, content control, and more. Inspired by NewPipe and Invidious, Piped aims to address architectural issues present in these alternatives. NewPipe exposes users' IPs to YouTube and has slow feeds, while Invidious uses excessive resources, crashes often, and requires various hacks for stability. Piped, while requiring JavaScript, offers an efficient and privacy-focused alternative where users can watch YouTube without connecting to Google's servers and maintain subscriptions without a Google account, despite some known issues like slower video buffering, which the project is actively working to improve.
