Being a writer on the largest novel platform can be quite taxing. Being able to update daily, persisting in writing, and clearly seeing the market without lax updates can bring in a decent monthly income. We had the opportunity to speak with several JJWXC writers, delving into their experiences and journeys. Join us as we explore the realities, triumphs, and trials of being an emerging author on JJWXC.

The Earnings of Authors on JJWXC

Author earnings can be as diverse as the stories they write. For many authors, especially those just starting, monthly earnings are modest. New authors often struggle to break through, with some earning as little as a few hundred yuan per month. This is exemplified by one author's account of earning barely 155 yuan in a month despite daily updates. In contrast, successful authors on JJWXC, particularly those who hit the gold lists or cater to popular genres, can see substantially higher incomes. Some authors report earnings in the range of several thousand yuan per month, with exceptional cases reaching monthly incomes of over 60,000 yuan. Skilled ghostwriters can also earn a considerable amount; earning up to 5,000 to 10,000 yuan per month by writing 8,000 per day. This significant disparity highlights the platform's competitive nature and the importance of understanding the readers.

A specific author, with a decade-long writing career, seldom features in the coveted gold list, yet has impressively amassed earnings totaling 6 million yuan. The performance of each book varies significantly. While the majority hover around the 200,000 to 300,000 yuan mark, there are instances where a book’s earnings can skyrocket up to 2 million yuan. For some fortunate authors, the opportunity to sell the rights to their work presents a lucrative windfall. However, the bread and butter for most authors on this platform predominantly come from e-book sales. Over time, as authors consistently add to their repertoire, the cumulative monthly income from their collective works can grow to a substantial sum. This steady build-up of income reflects not just the authors' prolific output but also their ability to engage and retain a dedicated readership over the years.

The Emotional and Professional Struggles

Writing on JJWXC involves navigating a landscape filled with both emotional and professional challenges. Authors encounter the demanding task of satisfying creative expression while adhering to audience expectations If readers are not satisfied with a particular chapter, they can request the chapter to be refunded or rewrite. This balance often leads to periods of self-doubt and frustration, especially when initial responses to their work are underwhelming or when their stories don't gain immediate traction. Beyond writing, authors on JJWXC must engage in marketing their work and understanding the platform's operational nuances. For many, particularly those who lean more towards creativity than business, this aspect of professional writing can be overwhelming.

Visibility and recognition on JJWXC present significant hurdles, especially as the platform's algorithm tends to favor popular genres and trending narratives. This bias can result in overshadowing works in niche genres, leading to feelings of marginalization among writers who are devoted to less conventional stories. The struggle for visibility in a landscape dominated by mainstream narratives can be particularly disheartening. Compounding this challenge is the direct influence of reader engagement on both visibility and income. Authors often find themselves in a dilemma, trying to align their creative vision with market demands and reader preferences. This can be taxing as fans on JJWXC can be quite toxic, same as any large platforms. Navigating this complex environment requires managing a wide range of reader feedback, which can profoundly impact an author's creative process and mental well-being, adding another layer of difficulty to their professional journey.

Keys to Success: Persistence & Adaptability

Success on JJWXC is not just about writing skill; it's about resilience, adaptability, and understanding the platform's culture. Successful authors often speak of the importance of persistence – sticking with their writing even when the going gets tough. Adapting to reader feedback and being open to tweaking storylines or styles can significantly impact an author's success. What does resilience mean? Authors have to publish 3,000 words, 7 days a week. Some even work in a 996 working hour system. ( Employees work from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm, 6 days per week ) Talk about mental toll!

What’s it like signing with JJWXC

Signing a contract with JJWXC is a big success milestone and yet it's just the start of the journey. The requirements for a successful contract involve not just the quality of writing but also a strategic approach to publication. Authors typically need to publish three chapters, amounting to around ten thousand words, to apply for a contract. This initial step is crucial for climbing the newcomer list and setting the stage for potential success. However, the journey doesn’t end there; many find that if they don’t get signed at this stage, it becomes increasingly difficult to secure a contract later. Then the author will be questioned by editors, primarily concerning the willingness to sign a five-year contract and the author’s capability to update at least 10,000 words weekly. This journey is not just about writing but also understanding and navigating the administrative and strategic aspects of the platform, all of which are integral to the success.

Readers, do you finally understand how hard it is to build a career on JJWXC. So start supporting them by purchasing their books!

For Authors with No Contract

New authors often face challenges in sustaining their work without a contract. Without a contract, they lack the necessary exposure to reach a wider audience and secure a stable income. For Chinese NSFW Danmei  authors, many are forced to publish their work on Taiwanese novel platforms, where they also do not have contracts. This lack of stability and security makes it difficult for authors to continue their craft and grow their reader base. In Unifans.io, we believe the culture will evolve to the next stage similar to YouTube where content creators rely on Patreon to fund their projects. Our goal is simple: to establish a space for Chinese creators with complete creative freedom and global accessibility, both financially and securely. We are always looking for new ideas, contact us on discord or reddit if you have any ideas or how you want to support your favorite author.

Here are some of our Danmei recommendations that are currently on our platform. They are all fanfictions with different backdrop so go through the first few chapters to get a feel of them. A special shout out to our Unifans writer, 市鞍马, has a fiction Haitang light novel, 纵容她, which is about romance with an extra sexual spice!
